The Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) has been involved with community development initiatives locally in Chicago and globally for nearly fifty years. The organization is a registered nonprofit with the mission to "release the capacity for positive social change and sustainable futures." The ICA is uniquely positioned in the nonprofit world because it owns a large eight story building in Chicago's diverse Uptown neighborhood. The building is made up of several other nonprofit tenants as well as one residential living floor.

The "Greenrise Uptown Learning Laboratory" demonstrates a creative culture for living and working within a historic 8-story building on the north side of Chicago. Built in 1923, it was given to ICA by Kemper Insurance in 1972. Today, it is the largest non-profit service center in the Midwest. Programs include medical and dental clinics for homeless and low-income persons, a drop-in center for troubled women, support activities for new immigrants, and job placement and training services. It is also the home for an intentional residential community. ICA is creating a "green culture" among its diverse tenants while establishing an energy efficient eco-system that aims to take the entire building off of the grid.
